Get what you need.

fortune-cookie-youre-fired-messageSo… I’ve been entertaining this plan for a little while now. The plan went like this – hold onto my job until things were looking a little more financially stable, and then take a tentative step into the life of a cartoonist by going part-time, maybe. Baby steps. Work up to doing this thing full time, and see how it goes. Always, always, have a safety net there in case things get rough.

Looks like that plan’s out the window. But you know what? I’m not broken up about it. Hell, how long have I been complaining about not having enough time to dedicate to the good things in life – like friends, and walks in the sunshine, and making more comics. It’s scary, yeah, but we’ll see how this thing goes.

It’s like a wise man once said: You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you just might find, you get what you need.

Besides, how many times in your life do you get to make an exit like that?

    Alina,

Sorry to hear about the job thing. Hope things turn out alright, no matter which way you decide to go with things.

But yeah…a great exit is not to be snorted at.

Sorry to hear that; so far the company I work for, in Scotland, has managed to avoid taking that action.

Ouch! Good luck with life as a professional cartoonist. If it helps any, I think you have what it takes, but getting there is always a bit … bumpy.

Glorious exit. I used to get laid off a lot (graphic design is a wicked industry!), and finally on my last layoff, I got to show up on my last day in a chic little dress & heels (unheard of), fresh from the new job interview I NAILED. SO much better than slithering out with my tail between my legs.

You’ve got the talent, go for it!

I know how you feel. I finally landed a decent local job, and then was told that I wasn’t experienced as my boss had thought (i.e. she didn’t want to take the two weeks to train me). I pulled a funny-man and laughed it off, telling her it was okay (honestly I’m still pissed, but at least she promised to give me a good reference).
So, yeah, my time is also free, and if it wasn’t for the importance of the wedding I’d probably be drawing more too.
Hope things work out for you, you crazy-canadian-gamer-gal you.

  18. I got started running my game store full time the same way. Well, without the rock star exit…. I was literally walked to the door. Rather annoyed me actually.

    Best of luck!
